VALORANT Network Troubleshooting
High Ping, Packet Loss, Ping Spikes, and Jitter
Use VALORANT’s network statistics to separate high latency, unstable ping, packet loss, Wi-Fi interference, background traffic, server issues, and ISP routing problems.
Last updated: July 13, 2026
If VALORANT shows normal Client FPS but players teleport, shots appear to register late, movement is corrected backward, or a network warning icon repeatedly appears, the problem is more likely related to high ping, Network RTT jitter, or packet loss than graphics performance.
A connection can show an average ping of 20 ms and still feel unstable when it repeatedly jumps to 80 or 100 ms. Short bursts of incoming or outgoing packet loss can also cause skipped inputs, delayed movement, inconsistent hit registration, or brief disconnections.
Do not judge the connection from Network RTT alone. Display RTT, RTT Jitter, incoming packet loss, outgoing packet loss, processing delays, and Client FPS together so that network lag and PC frame drops are not confused.
High ping
Actions and server responses feel consistently delayed.
Ping spikes and jitter
The displayed ping changes rapidly and the game feels inconsistent from moment to moment.
Packet loss
Some data never reaches the server or your PC, causing teleporting, ignored actions, or warning icons.
Fastest VALORANT high-ping troubleshooting order
Check Riot service status → enable the network graphs → compare Ethernet with Wi-Fi → stop downloads and uploads → restart the modem and router → disable VPNs and proxies → compare Network Buffering → test the local gateway and external connection → compare another time or network → contact Riot Support or the ISP with recorded results.
Separate network lag from low FPS first
When the entire screen and mouse movement become choppy, use the VALORANT FPS and stuttering guide. When the image remains smooth but players teleport or inputs arrive late, continue with this network guide.

Ping, Jitter, Packet Loss, and FPS Are Different
The first step is identifying which measurement changes when the problem appears. Similar symptoms can require completely different solutions.
| Metric | Meaning | Typical symptom | Check first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Network RTT | Round-trip time between the PC and game server | Consistently delayed movement and actions | Server region, Ethernet, VPN, and ISP route |
| Network RTT Jitter | Variation in the arrival time of network packets | Low average ping but irregular response | Wi-Fi, uploads, router queues, and congestion |
| Incoming Packet Loss | Data from the server does not reach the PC | Players teleport or world updates appear late | Cable, Wi-Fi, router, modem, and ISP |
| Outgoing Packet Loss | Inputs sent from the PC do not reach the server | Movement, shots, or abilities are delayed or ignored | Upload activity, Wi-Fi, cable, router, and ISP |
| RTT and Processing Delays | Network delay combined with additional processing time | Response feels slower than the displayed average ping suggests | Jitter, buffering, FPS changes, and system load |
| Client FPS | How quickly the PC renders the game | The entire image and crosshair movement become rough | Graphics settings, CPU, GPU, overlays, and temperature |
A low average ping can still be unstable
A connection that remains near 25 ms is usually more predictable than one that repeatedly changes between 10 and 70 ms, even when both produce a similar average over the entire match.
1. Check Riot Service Status Before Changing Settings
When high ping or packet loss begins suddenly, check Riot’s service-status page before resetting Windows or changing the router.
- Open the Riot Games Service Status page.
- Select VALORANT.
- Select the correct region.
- Review current incidents and recently closed notices.
- Ask whether party members in the same region have the same problem.
- Record the date, match time, server, and warning icon.
One bad match does not prove a permanent PC problem
Test another match before making large changes. A temporary server incident, route change, or short network interruption may disappear without a local reset.
2. Enable VALORANT Network Statistics
Open the Video statistics menu and display the network measurements as text, graphs, or both. Menu names can vary slightly by language and game version.
| Statistic | Recommended display | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Network RTT | Text and graph | Normal value and repeated maximum |
| Network RTT Jitter | Graph | Spikes that occur with inconsistent movement |
| Packet Loss Incoming | Text and graph | Loss when enemies teleport or animations skip |
| Packet Loss Outgoing | Text and graph | Loss when inputs or shots appear to be ignored |
| Network RTT and Processing Delays | Graph | Additional delay beyond basic RTT |
| Client FPS | Text and graph | Whether frame drops occur at the same time |
Record a full match instead of one screenshot
Note the normal ping, maximum repeated ping, packet-loss timing, wired or wireless connection, server, match time, and applications running in the background.
3. Compare Ethernet and Wi-Fi
A fast Wi-Fi speed test does not guarantee stable game latency. Wireless interference, distance, walls, mesh hops, Bluetooth activity, and neighboring networks can create short bursts of jitter or packet loss.
- Connect the PC directly to the router with an Ethernet cable.
- Disable Wi-Fi during the wired comparison.
- Use the same VALORANT server and time period.
- Compare Network RTT, RTT Jitter, and packet loss.
- Try another Ethernet cable when loss continues.
- Try another LAN port on the router.
- Remove powerline adapters, repeaters, docks, or unnecessary network adapters for the baseline test.
Ethernet fixes the problem
Focus on Wi-Fi signal strength, channel congestion, distance, router placement, wireless drivers, or mesh and repeater behavior.
Ethernet still shows loss
Continue with the cable, router, modem, household traffic, ISP route, and Riot server checks.
When Ethernet is not available
- Move the PC closer to the router.
- Reduce walls and large objects between the router and PC.
- Compare 5 GHz or 6 GHz at short range.
- Compare 2.4 GHz when the router is far away or behind several walls.
- Disconnect unnecessary Bluetooth devices during testing.
- Avoid placing the router beside a television, microwave, or crowded electronics.
- Update the wireless adapter driver through the PC or adapter manufacturer.
4. Stop Background Downloads and Uploads
Uploads are particularly important because many home connections provide much less upload capacity than download capacity. When uploads fill the available connection, VALORANT packets can wait in the router queue and create ping spikes.
| Application or device | Problem activity | Test action |
|---|---|---|
| Steam, Epic Games, EA app, Xbox app | Game downloads and patches | Pause all downloads |
| Windows Update | Updates and delivery activity | Check update progress |
| OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox | Photo, video, and document uploads | Pause synchronization temporarily |
| Discord, OBS, streaming tools | Screen sharing and broadcasting | Stop streaming and sharing |
| Web browsers | Video, downloads, and cloud applications | Close unnecessary tabs and transfers |
| Torrent and P2P software | Continuous uploads and many active connections | Exit the application completely |
| Phones, televisions, and consoles | Streaming, backups, and updates on the same router | Compare with household traffic paused |
Too many applications open automatically?
Use the Windows 11 startup-app guide to prevent unnecessary launchers, messaging tools, cloud applications, and recording software from opening after every sign-in.
5. Restart the Modem and Router, Then Disable VPNs
Power-cycle the network equipment
- Exit VALORANT and the Riot Client.
- Pause all downloads and uploads.
- Shut down the PC.
- Unplug the router and modem.
- Wait approximately 30 seconds.
- Power on the modem first.
- Wait until its connection indicators become stable.
- Power on the router.
- Start the PC and repeat the network-statistics test.
Disable VPNs and proxies
A VPN or proxy adds another route between the PC and Riot’s server. It may occasionally bypass a poor ISP route, but it can also add latency, jitter, or packet loss.
- Exit the VPN application completely.
- Disable gaming VPNs and network accelerators for the baseline test.
- Disable browser VPN extensions.
- Check whether a company or school proxy is active.
- Restart the Riot Client after changing the route.
Avoid registry and TCP optimization packs
Bulk registry files, unofficial network boosters, and random TCP commands can alter several settings without identifying the original cause. Establish the wired, no-traffic baseline first.
6. Test VALORANT Network Buffering
Network Buffering attempts to smooth inconsistent packet arrival by holding a small amount of network data before processing it. This can make movement appear more stable on an inconsistent connection, but additional buffering can also add processing delay.
- Record the current Network Buffering value.
- Enable the RTT Jitter and packet-loss graphs.
- Change the buffering value by only one step.
- Play one full match on the same server and connection.
- Compare movement stability, processing delays, and input response.
- Keep the setting only when it produces a repeatable improvement.
- Return to the original setting when the result becomes slower or less consistent.
Buffering does not repair the connection
If packet loss remains on a wired connection, continue investigating the cable, router, modem, ISP line, and route instead of increasing buffering repeatedly.
7. DNS Can Help Login Problems, but It Is Not a Guaranteed Ping Fix
DNS translates service names into IP addresses. It can affect name resolution, Riot Client login, website access, and patch-service connections. It does not normally determine the entire route used after the game server connection has been established.
Test DNS only after Ethernet, background traffic, router, VPN, and server-status checks have failed.
| DNS provider | Preferred IPv4 | Alternate IPv4 |
|---|---|---|
| Cloudflare | 1.1.1.1 | 1.0.0.1 |
| Google Public DNS | 8.8.8.8 | 8.8.4.4 |
| ISP automatic DNS | Automatic | Automatic |
Compare the actual in-game result
Record Network RTT, jitter, and packet loss before and after the DNS change. Return to automatic DNS when there is no measurable improvement.
8. Check Network Usage in Windows 11
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Open the Processes tab.
- Select the Network column to sort by activity.
- Identify applications that continue transferring data.
- Pause known downloads, uploads, and synchronization safely.
- Check the Performance tab for the active Ethernet or Wi-Fi adapter.
- Do not end unknown Windows services only because they show network activity.
FPS also drops at the same time?
Use the Windows 11 gaming optimization guide to check CPU, RAM, disk activity, Game Mode, GPU preference, overlays, power settings, and background recording.
9. Test the Local Gateway and External Connection
These tests do not reproduce the exact Riot server route. Their purpose is to determine whether instability already appears between the PC and router or between the home network and the wider internet.
Find the default gateway
Test the PC-to-router connection
Large spikes or timeouts at the gateway point toward Wi-Fi interference, an Ethernet cable, network adapter, router port, or router problem inside the home network.
Test an external address
When the gateway test is stable but the external test repeatedly spikes or loses packets, investigate the modem, ISP line, regional congestion, or external route.
Record the route
A single asterisk or one slow intermediate hop does not automatically prove a fault. Some network equipment limits or deprioritizes diagnostic responses while forwarding normal traffic correctly.
Use a mobile hotspot only as a comparison
When the home connection repeatedly loses packets but a hotspot is stable at the same time, the home router, modem, ISP line, or ISP route becomes more likely. Mobile data is not necessarily a good permanent gaming connection.
10. When VALORANT Ping Spikes Only in the Evening
A repeatable time pattern is useful evidence. Record results during the day and at the same evening hour for several days.
| Comparison result | Possible cause | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Ethernet also spikes only in the evening | Household, neighborhood, or ISP congestion | Reduce traffic and record results for the ISP |
| Only Wi-Fi becomes unstable | Wireless channel congestion | Use Ethernet or compare another wireless band |
| Every device becomes slow | Router, modem, household traffic, or ISP | Check active devices and power-cycle equipment |
| Only VALORANT is affected | Riot server, selected route, firewall, or game-specific issue | Check Riot status and submit logs |
| A hotspot is stable at the same time | Home ISP, modem, router, or route | Provide the comparison to the ISP |
11. Separate Riot Server, Router, and ISP Problems
| Situation | More likely category | Evidence to collect |
|---|---|---|
| Several party members have the same spike | Server or data-center incident | Region, server, match time, and Riot status |
| Only one Wi-Fi PC loses packets | Wireless adapter, signal, or local interference | Ethernet comparison and gateway ping |
| Several wired devices lose packets | Router, modem, or ISP | Cable tests, external ping, and time pattern |
| Only one match is affected | Temporary server or route change | Whether the following match returns to normal |
| Every evening shows the same loss | Household or regional ISP congestion | Daytime and evening wired comparisons |
| Home internet fails but hotspot is stable | Home router, modem, ISP line, or ISP route | Same PC, server, time, and match conditions |

Key takeaway
The best VALORANT high-ping fix is not a random DNS or registry setting. First record Network RTT, jitter, and packet loss. Then remove Wi-Fi and background traffic from the test. If loss remains on Ethernet and appears outside the local gateway, collect the time pattern and contact the ISP or Riot with evidence.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does VALORANT ping suddenly jump above 100 ms?
Common causes include Wi-Fi interference, background uploads, household traffic, router queues, a VPN, ISP congestion, route changes, or a temporary Riot server issue.
Why do players teleport when my ping shows 20 ms?
The average RTT may be low while Network RTT Jitter or short packet-loss bursts remain high. Enable the jitter and incoming and outgoing packet-loss graphs.
What is Network RTT Jitter in VALORANT?
It shows how much the network delay changes from packet to packet. High jitter means data is arriving at inconsistent intervals even when the average ping appears acceptable.
How much packet loss is acceptable?
A stable wired or high-quality wireless connection should remain close to zero packet loss. Even short repeating bursts can cause movement correction and ignored inputs.
Will changing DNS lower VALORANT ping?
It may help name-resolution, login, or patch-service problems, but it does not normally change the complete route used by an active match. Compare the actual in-game statistics before keeping the change.
Is 5 GHz Wi-Fi as stable as Ethernet?
It can perform well near the router, but wireless interference and signal changes remain possible. Ethernet is the better diagnostic baseline for repeated packet loss and ping spikes.
Can Network Buffering fix packet loss?
It can smooth inconsistent packet arrival by adding a small delay, but it does not repair a damaged cable, unstable Wi-Fi, router fault, or ISP line.
Why is VALORANT ping high only in the evening?
Household traffic, crowded Wi-Fi channels, neighborhood usage, or regional ISP congestion may be involved. Compare a wired connection during daytime and evening hours.
Can a VPN improve VALORANT ping?
A VPN can occasionally bypass a poor route, but it can also add distance, latency, and instability. Use the normal connection as the baseline and treat a VPN result as routing evidence rather than a guaranteed fix.
Why does only VALORANT have packet loss?
Different games and websites use different servers and routes. Check Riot service status, compare another network, record the affected server and time, and submit the results when the problem repeats.
